I've been disliked for less.

Social skills weren't particularly emphasized in my upbringing. That's not an attempt at excusing the behavior, just...lending context.

And at the risk of sounding pretty rude: yeah, I realised that. I see it like this: your suggestions came from a place of love, and you took my criticism pretty well. There's no real reason to dislike you just yet.

What sort of foods do you like?

It'd be rude of me to be picky.

I like things that aren't overly complicated. Sandwiches are fine. Pasta or a stir fry are good, too. Things that take a lot of preparation and fuss are more trouble than they're worth, I think.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that - but then I'm someone who enjoys cooking. That said, if sandwiches will do, I'll wait to wow you with a fussy dish when things aren't so short notice.

Knowing how probably makes all the difference. I can bake a little, but I was never encouraged to learn how to cook. Food preparation was something I wasn't supposed to be concerned with.

Making cookies for myself at midnight, on the other hand, was a personal endeavor.

... Alright, I'm just going to say it: it sounds like you had a pretty unique upbringing. What exactly was prioritised for you, if not social skills and feeding yourself?

...I wasn't trying to be deliberately obtuse. Just minimalist. That's something I was taught, too.

Would you prefer a thorough answer or a succinct one? I can try to avoid having my answers lead to more questions, but I'd have to elaborate on some things for the sake of necessary context.

Most likely. It's an unorthodox set of circumstances.

Put overly simply, I was raised to be my grandfather's heir, which to him meant excelling in only one area of study. Other disciplines were negligible, even discouraged. Someone I know once compared it to a monarch bringing up their successor, and I suppose that's apt.

"Unraveling deception to find the truth" — that's what was prioritized for me.

Not much of a childhood then, huh? I suppose that's kind of relatable.

Are you carrying on with the whole grandfather's heir thing here, or are you taking a bit of time off for yourself? Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but this could be a good opportunity to figure out what kind of a person you want to be on your own terms.

It's interesting. Everyone I've told about it has had precisely that same reaction.

It's undeniable that his methods were...sometimes questionable. He kept me from seeing my mother when she was dying, and he actively discouraged me from making and maintaining friendships. Our work came first, and if it was for work, there's nothing he wouldn't have given me. It was only everything else that went by the wayside.

But I don't necessarily disagree with what he raised me to be, or the person he made me into. So...it's been more difficult than it sounds. Exploring other avenues.
